TOPIC: THE SERVANT SAVIOR
SCRIPTURE: Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. - John 13:14 - 15
A certain senior pastor was only months into his tenure at his new church, when church members made an astonishing discovery about him. Following a special dramatic presentation in the sanctuary, participants began the laborious process of putting the large room back in order for the next service. Although the church employed several full-time custodians, the new pastor rolled up his sleeves and began to move furniture and vacuum the carpet. Church members exchanged stunned glances.
Why are we so surprised when our leaders take on the role of a servant? We live in a culture where being a member of a certain group, “has its privileges.” We have become accustomed to leaders who would rather ascend to a position of status than stoop to serve others.
Today's anchor scripture reflects just the opposite principle. Washing the feet of houseguests was a job assigned to the lowliest servant, so the disciples were astounded when Jesus himself took on that humble task. Scripture tells us that Peter protested vigorously. Jesus had a point to make, however, and he taught his followers what it meant to be a servant-leader, not by preaching but by practice.
“No servant is greater than his master” (John 13:16). When we seek to model ourselves after the One we worship, we need to start from the ground up, and that means serving others in the most humble of ways. Throughout the day, look for practical, unexpected ways you can serve others with the caring and compassion of Christ.
Prayer - Lord, open my eyes to the serving opportunities before me in Jesus name
Insight - A servant Leader is a friend of God
